Ah, mi querida
Argentina... El corazón lleno de amor, te dejé. Antes
¿Qué me ocurrió?
Seamos sinceros, no
añaden: "Pero nunca me iría..." ¿Perdón? ¿Algo no
escuché
bien?

Quoi ? Une histoire d'amour
pour un pays, une patrie, un peuple. Que m'est-il arrivé ?
Soyons honnêtes, ça n'a
Me

Oh, my dear Argentina...
I left you with a heart full of love. Before I started this adventure, I felt that something
special was waiting for me there. What? A love story, love for a country, a
nation, a population. What happened to me?
Let's be honest, it was
not love at first sight. I was happy and relieved to cross the border because I
could finally speak the language and thanks to all the good I had heard about it. But I
got desilusioned very quickly... I was confronted to a typical feeling of the
Argentinians which was unknown to me: nostalgia. Combined to pessimism and high
political tension, the first question that you are asked becomes: "What
the fuck are you doing here?! It is not like it used to be and it will not get
better..." You can be the most optimistic and enthusiastic person in the
world, after hearing it for the tenth time, you finally ask yourself: "Why did I come here?!" The problem is that, after convincing you that it
is the worst country in the world (Argentinians can be very persuasive), they
add: "But I will never leave it..." Sorry?! Did I miss something?
No... this is the big paradox of the Argentinian society: they dream of a
better country, but still think that this nation they criticise so much is the
most beautiful and the greatest of all. A contagious nationalism...
No, Argentina is not
perfect. In addition to social issues (that should not be underestimated), a
lot of little things bother me; these things that, when you think about it,
leave you with this silly smile on the face, as when you talk about the little faults of the loved one. For me, Argentina is... a singular culture, a subtle
mix between Italy and Latin America; the mate, this drink symbol of friendship
and sharing; people, who welcome you with open arms, interested by who you are rather than by what's in your wallet; a
gastronomy, probably not very healthy (I was happy to arrive in Peru and lose
weight again), but so yummy; a sense of humour and self-derision; a language,
with its own expressions and an accent easily recognisable; and, obviously,
wonderful landscapes, incredibly varied and beautiful.
For me, this is
Argentina. I dare to make fun of it because I identify myself with this nation,
I feel proud when they think I'm Argentinian because of my accent and I feel
sad each time I cross the border. Will I go back? Of course I will. And maybe
more quickly and for more time than expected...
